Spomyny, Ukrainian for “memories” or “memoirs”, is a sound installation by Bulgakova built from metres of insulation pipes that channel sonic artefacts drawn from the years of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine: intimate recordings of the artist navigating life between abroad and home, conversations with friends, family, and strangers, and found footage from social media and news channels capturing flashes of extreme experience inside everyday reality, all assembled into a non-linear narrative that the audience uncovers one pipe at a time, layering sounds as they go, a work rooted in personalised storytelling that extends Bulgakova’s earlier piece Sonic Sprawl and traces the physical material itself back to a shipyard in Amsterdam where, in 2018, it was first found among a community of Ukrainian men at work.
